The 1st stop of the journey is a double darning stitch.

Now you must be wondering what is double darning stitch. Well, stitches definition is,

Double darning

Double darning stitch is stitching 2 times in the same line, filling the gaps. You can arrange the stitches however you like: in straight lines, diagonal lines, staggered like bricks, or even in fancy patterns with this darning technique.  This even works best on needlepoint.

Sounds interesting, right? Let me show you how to do a double darning stitch.

Bring your needle up from the back of your fabric to the front at the starting point. I’m using 2 stands of sashiko thread for double darning stitch. You can use this for other types of stitches, too.

Push the needle in from the outside of the fabric and push back the needle ½ inch gap. Make a stitch. That’s how to start a stitch.

Then I push back the needle, giving ¼ inch gap. Make your first stitch by inserting the needle back into the fabric a short distance away.

Try to keep the stitch length even. It should match the gap you’ll leave between stitches. Continue this pattern, creating a row of evenly spaced stitches. Think of it as “stitch, space, stitch, space.” it won’t be an invisible stitch but a decorative one.

turn your needle around and start heading back to your starting point

Once you finish the first row, turn your needle around and start heading back to your starting point. This time, fill in the spaces you left earlier by stitching into the same holes where your thread passed before.

Push back the needle from the end of your last stitch.

And then push the needle in through the 1s stitch. This step will fill the gap between the stitches I made previously.

Move just below your first row and begin the next one the same way. Follow the same “stitch, space, stitch” pattern, keeping your stitches aligned with the first row.

Continue working row by row, following the same process. Each row should line up with the previous ones to create until I am done with my Double darning stitch embroidery. This won’t be the strong stitch. But it is a decorative one for any embroidery book. And that’s it!

That’s how you can do beautiful double darning stitch patterns. What? Already forgotten the steps? No worries, that’s why I made a Double darning stitch pdf. Download it and have a look at it whenever you need a revision.
