If you love adding a touch of creativity to your sewing projects or simply want a reliable way to repair fabrics with style,

The diagonal darning stitch is a perfect stitch rather than woven darn.

Not only is it practical for mending tears and holes, but it’s also a fantastic decorative stitch to enhance your designs.

Diagonal Darning Stitch

Let me show you how you can do diagonal darning stitch-

step by step diagonal darning stitch
Lay your fabric flat on the table

Lay your fabric flat on the table. Trim any frayed edges for a clean workspace if you’re repairing a hole. Feel free to pop the fabric into an embroidery hoop if you want extra tension. It’ll make it easier to stitch diagonal directions. You can even try using a darning egg.

I did this for every different types of hand stitches with pictures.

Pick a thread that matches your fabric, or go bold with a contrasting color. Thread it through the needle and tie a small knot like another darning stitch at the end. So it will be like a kinda invisible darning form.

Ready? Let’s go to the diagonal stitches.

push the needle up from the wrong side to the right side

Flip the fabric over and push the needle up from the wrong side to the right side, anchoring the thread with that little knot underneath. Think of it like you are mending.

Begin at one corner and sew diagonally to the opposite side. I’m keeping the stitches evenly spaced.

Diagonal Darning Stitch Gap Between them

Think 2 to 4 mm apart. That’s the perfect Diagonal darning stitch stitches.

I’m giving 4 mm gap and pulling the thread gently after each stitch to avoid puckering.

Keep going with those diagonal lines until you’ve filled the whole space. It’s like painting with thread! This looks so stunning if you are doing Diagonal darning stitch needlepoint.

Stay relaxed, and remember: even spacing makes everything look neat & makes the perfect sewing inspiration.

Now for the end part—

Tie off the fabric thread with a small knot on the back. Snip the extra thread. Your stitch is secure , just like I did in scotch darning stitch.

That’s it! You have to cover your damaged part with a decorative look. No one will ever know there is a wear out there. 😜 save this Diagonal darning stitch pdf for later. In case you forget about stitch guide availability.

Admire Your Work

Take a moment to appreciate what you’ve created. Smooth out the fabric, remove the hoop (if you used one), and admire your neat, diagonal darning stitches. It’s both functional and fabulous! What are you waiting for? Try it for yourself and share your work with sewing inspo. Stay tuned for weekly blog posts or any video tourital.
