I am done with many kinds of darning stitches. So when I decided to give my jeans some fancy look, I thought, why not try an embroidery darning stitch pattern? Many darning patterns are a great fit for embroidery,
Such As,
- double darning stitch
- scotch darning stitch
- surface darning stitch
- Japanese sashiko darning stitch
They are all there, but I’m going with Japanese Sashiko Darning today. It’s easy yet serves the fancy look. Let me show you how this darn stitch. This may sound similar to Japanese darning stitch design, but it’s not.
I’m drawing a grid of 5mm squares inside the circles. The size of the squares can be adjusted to 1/4 inch if needed, but I’m sticking with 5mm for this design, basic hand stitches with pictures.
The pattern has a beautiful weaving effect as I stitch along the grid lines. The vertical, horizontal, and diagonal stitches create the design and strengthen the fabric. It also makes it more durable.
This is why I chose the Hitomezashi method. It’s both functional and visually stunning.
First, I will stitch horizontally, working my way across the fabric. Insert the needle from the circle line.
That should be locking the thread! Now push the needle in & out through the line.
Move the fabric 360 degrees and push the needle in & out the same way. Now, keep doing it until you have the circle.
I’ll make one stitch per square along the grid for each stitch. As I go, I need to ensure that the fabric beneath is stitched through evenly. This will keep the stitches neat and reinforce the fabric effectively. That will make a strong hand sewing stitch.
Next,
Now, I will push the needle in & out above the 1st stitch day. I’m going to stitch vertically on this main circle. This time, I’ll stitch selectively, following the pattern carefully to achieve the desired effect.
After doing the 1st line, do the same way for the next line. Each stitch will connect the design seamlessly while maintaining the integrity of the fabric.
Keep doing this until you are done with embroidery darning stitch.
Isn’t it interesting? It is, so I made an Embroidery darning stitch pdf for you. Download it and save it for later.
