I totally get what you mean! When you first hear “ladder stitch,” your mind immediately jumps to something that looks like an actual ladder, right? But then, when you find it’s an invisible stitch, it can feel like a bit of a letdown. 😔 I was in the same boat!
So, one day I was chatting with my grandma, and I mentioned my little disappointment. She laughed and said,
“Well, there’s a stitch that looks like a ladder!” I was all ears and asked, “What’s it called?” She told me it was the Ladder Chain Stitch. 😍
Ladder Chain
To do a Ladder Chain Stitch by hand, create a series of chain stitches that connect with small loops in between, forming a ladder-like pattern.🪜✨
I couldn’t wait to try it, and now I’m hooked. So, I got home and started digging into it more.

What Is Ladder Chain Stitch?
The ladder chain stitch is a ladder of thread. Unlike the invisible ladder stitch, which hides in the background, this one stands out with its beautiful, interlocking loops that look like a little ladder. It is also known as an open chain stitch.
It’s eye-catching and versatile, working wonderfully for borders, embellishments, or even standalone designs. Think of it as a way to add a bit of whimsy and creativity to your fabric, making it more playful and stylish!
This stitch is worth trying if you want to spice up your stitching game. 🪜✨
How I Did Ladder Chain Stitch By Hand
Sounds fun, right? Yes, it is! So, of course, I had to try it to add a new product to my embroidery product list. First of all, let’s grab tools,
Materials:
- 2-4 stands Embroidery thread or floss
- Trapsay Needle
- Fabric
- Embroidery hoop (optional, but helpful)
Instruction
First thing first, I draw 2 lines with a pencil on my fabric. I leave ¼ inch between 2 lines. I apply this while doing the herringbone ladder, too.
I bring the needle up through the fabric at the spot where I want to begin my ladder chain stitch. This is my starting point for stitch.
Next, I push the needle down again to the other line. But this time, I left a small space (about 1/4 inch) from where I came up. As I pull the thread, I ensure the first loop forms, just like doing a ladder stitch on EPP.
Then again, push the needle beside the 1st stitch.
Then I give ½ inch gap and slide the needle in & slide out through the 2nd line. Pull the needle down.
This should lock the stitch like this 👇 This is similar to the hem ladder stitch.
Now slide your needle through the 1st stitch. Pull the thread all the in. This will create 2nd lock to the other side.
Then, slide the needle through the 1 lock you created and pull the needle.
I keep going—
Each time, I go down and then up, creating a new loop that links the previous one. With each stitch, I make sure the loops are evenly spaced, and they begin to form that lovely ladder effect. As I stitch, I make sure the loops sit neatly one after the other, creating a chain of loops that looks like a ladder.
Now, if you asked about the size, then I would say it depends on your embroidery.
But I like to keep my Ladder Chain Stitch 12 inches long.
Once I’ve made enough of the ladder chain, I tie off the thread at the back of the fabric. I ensure it’s secure so nothing unravels, and my design is complete!
