After getting to know what ladder stitch is. I thought a new stitcher must also be confused about what does a ladder stitch look like. Cause if you look at the right side of the fabric, you can’t see anything.

What Does A Ladder Stitch Look Like

Cause,

A ladder stitch looks like little rungs of a ladder between two fabric edges, but once you pull the thread, tight poof! It disappears for a seamless finish.

Wanna learn more about its looks? Okay, let’s talk more about this for sewinginspo readers.

The stitches run side to side between two folded fabric edges, making a zigzag pattern. Each stitch is small, even, and sits neatly across from the last one. This is the easiest stitch among all the stitches.

Once you pull the thread, the fabric edges come together, and the stitches disappear like magic! It may be reasonable with a slip stitch, but it’s not the same, trust me. But it may look different if you are looking at herringbone ladder stitch.

The seam looks smooth and natural, as if the fabric was never opened. It’s a super handy stitch for closing up stuffed toys, pillows, or any project where you don’t want the thread to show.

Ladder Stitch Pattern

Although ladder stitch is mainly used to lock 2 fabrics together. However, other types of ladder stitches can be used as embroidery patterns. Here are a few patterns I have tried,

Ladder Stitch Pattern
  • Herringbone Ladder Stitch: This one’s great for a crisscrossed, V-shaped pattern that adds strength and a subtle design to the seam.
  • Ladder Chain Stitch: I love this pattern’s textured, chain-like effect. It’s perfect when I want to add a bit of decoration to my projects. I also do this pattern on epp.
  • Ladder Hem Stitch: I often turn to this for securing hems, especially on delicate fabrics, as it gives a smooth and neat finish without being visible.
  • Stockinette Ladder Stitch: This stitch is handy for knit or woven fabrics. It creates an invisible, smooth finish along seams.

You can try it out for a fun touch to your embroidery, of course.

Outro

I’ll never forget the first time I tried the ladder stitch. I was working on a stuffed toy, and when I pulled the thread tight, the stitches disappeared, leaving a smooth, invisible seam.

Since then, I’ve used it for hems, pillow closures, and even embroidery. If you’re new to it, give it a try. You’ll quickly see how it transforms your projects with a polished, professional finish!
