I have been doing embroidery with all types of stitches for a long time. So I thought, why not try something different? I make a bunny with felt and take notes on How to do blanket stitch on felt for my sewing inspo.
So let’s go make a bunny 🐰
First of all, print out the bunny shape on any page or draw it. Then, cut down the bunny shape with scissors for hand sewing stitches.
Now, here comes the tricky part: choosing the right feel. Cause there are various types of felt, such as:
- Fur felt
- Acrylic felt
- Rayon felt
- Pressed felt
- Needled felt
- Woven felt
The choice was very tricky, like choosing applique for blanket stitch, but I decided to go with 100% woven felt. Cause it is easy and convenient for the bunny.
Now, take that bunny cut paper and place it on felt fabric. And start to pin it down the printed template of blanket stitch.
Now again, cut the felt fabric along with the bunny shape.
Now that you have cut all the fabric & pieces together, it’s time to stitch them all together with blanket stitch.
So now let me demonstrate how to do a blanket stitch on felt and make a bunny out of it.
Thread your needle with a color that matches the bunny, or you could get creative and use a contrasting color for a fun effect. First, I’ll make the tummy part. For that, I’m using running stitch or you can use overcast stitch.
Run the needle in and out of the fabric. Keep the stitches about 2-3 millimetres apart from the edge. It’ll give you a neat, simple line.
Once everything is stitched, step back and ensure your tummy and muzzle are lined up and securely attached. These little touches will give your bunny some serious character!
Once the tummy and muzzle are in place, it’s time to add the bunny’s little ears and eyes. These details make the bunny come to life and give it that adorable look.
Start cutting out 2 ear shapes from your felt. You can make them as long or short as you like. Just ensure they’re balanced and positioned where they’ll look cute! Now stitch them together with the running stitch.
Once the ears are securely stitched, it’s time for the eyes. 👁️
You can cut small circles from black felt or use black embroidery floss to create the eyes. Pin them to the bunny’s face, making sure they’re evenly spaced and looking sweet.
If you’re using felt circles, a simple running stitch around the edges will do the trick to secure them in place.
After all that stitching, give your bunny one last check to make sure everything’s even and secure. Now it’s time to make it give it a little bit of a thick touch to the bunny. So I added another felt cut fabric with blanket stitch.
To do this, just take your second felt piece and position it where you want to add. Pin it in place so it doesn’t move around as you stitch.
Now, let’s begin putting two pieces join together! If you run out of thread, then put it back and start again.
Let’s start with Classic blanket stitch forms. So, I Begin at the edge of the fabric, bringing your needle up from the back of the felt near the edge. Next, insert the needle back into the fabric about ⅙ inch away from where it first came out.
Pull the needle through, and before tightening the stitch, create a small loop with the thread. Then, pass the needle through the loop you’ve made to form the first stitch.
Repeat this process all along the edge until the end hand sewing and the bunny is done.If wanna see a visual guide, then don’t worry; I’ve got you covered too. Here is a video tourital.
