The top stitch thread is not like other stitch threads. The top stitch is quite visible on the right side of the fabric, and it is mainly used to straighten it. That’s why you can’t use just any other thread on it. And I learned it the hard way, trust me! 😑
So basically,
Your topstitch thread needs to be thicker and stronger than regular sewing thread. Why? Because it’s doing double duty.
Now, what kind of thread fits the bill?
Stitch Thread
Polyester and nylon threads are the top stitch threads. These threads are not just strong. They’re also durable and versatile, which makes them perfect for topstitching on everything from jeans to leather bags.
But is that our only choice? Not really! There are more. Let me share what thread I like to use to sew.
At A Glance:
- Topstitch thread is thicker and stronger than regular sewing thread.
- Gutermann topstitch thread tops the list for strength and flawless finishes.
- Go heavier (30-weight) for bold, standout stitches.

What Is Topstitching Thread?
The topstitching thread should be the thicker, stronger thread that makes your stitches stand out, both in looks and durability. You can’t just use normal thread like any type of stitch.
Unlike regular thread, this one is specifically designed to handle the extra tension that comes with topstitching while adding that bold, professional finish to your projects.
Now, when it comes to choosing the right topstitching thread, you’ve got options:
- Polyester: Durable, versatile, and perfect for various fabrics.
- Nylon: A go-to for heavy-duty fabrics like leather and canvas because it’s super strong and smooth.
- Cotton/Polyester Blend: The most common choice for jeans and denim.
Why? It combines the strength of polyester with the natural, matte finish of cotton, making it perfect for those classic, rugged topstitches we all love on denim.
My Favorite Top Stitch Thread
There are, of course, some basic thread choices for top stitch. Not all threads are created equal, and I have my favorites! For bold, eye-catching stitches. Such as,
Polyester Topstitch Thread
I absolutely love using polyester topstitch thread for my projects because it’s the perfect blend of strength, durability, and versatility. This thread can handle high tension without snapping. It is ideal for thicker fabrics like denim, canvas, or leather or other sewinginspo work.
The best part is,
Polyester thread is available in eleven different sizes, ranging from ultra-fine, hair-thin options with a 1.5-pound tensile strength to robust 1-millimeter thick threads that can withstand up to 98 pounds of tension.
Plus, it glides smoothly through the stitch, ensuring clean and consistent stitches every time. Its slightly glossy finish adds a polished, professional look to my work, whether I’m creating bold decorative stitches or reinforcing seams.
So I can rely on it for almost any project. It’s my go-to choice for topstitching, and it never disappoints!
Gutermann Top Stitch Thread
Gutermann top stitch thread is my other favourite thread for topstitch. I absolutely love using Gutermann topstitch thread because it combines strength, durability, and a smooth finish that makes my stitching look flawless.
Gutermann topstitch thread pairs best with a topstitch needle (size 90/14 or 100/16) with thickness # 30.
It is perfect for all kinds of top-sewing decorative details, reinforcing seams, or adding a professional finish, Gutermann’s topstitch thread is a reliable and stylish choice for any project.
Nylon Topstitch Thread
Nylon topstitch thread is a true workhorse and one of my top picks for heavy-duty projects. I was working on a custom leather tote bag, and I knew I needed a thread that could handle the thick material without snapping or fraying.
The way it glided through the leather was so smooth, and those glossy, bold stitches stood out perfectly against the rich texture of the bag.
Not only did it reinforce the seams beautifully, but it also added that professional, high-end look I was aiming for. Every time I look at the finished bag, I can’t help but appreciate how strong and sleek those stitches are. I’m officially in love with the nylon topstitch thread.
Cotton Topstitch Thread
Cotton topstitch thread is my go-to when I’m working with natural fabrics and want a soft, matte finish that blends seamlessly into the design. It’s perfect for creating subtle, elegant stitches on lightweight garments like shirts, dresses, and casual wear.
What I love most is how it feels so organic it complements cotton, linen, and other breathable fabrics beautifully.
The thread may not be as strong as polyester or nylon, but its smooth texture and natural look make it ideal for projects where style and comfort come first.
Whether I’m sewing a summer blouse or adding decorative details to a linen tote, cotton topstitch thread always gives me that clean, classic finish I’m looking for. I love those designs so much that I even add them to my sewing book.
Bonded Thread
Bonded thread is my other favourite one for top stitch, and here’s why.
It’s super strong, thanks to its 2,3 or 4-ply construction that’s coated with a special polymer or resin.
This coating keeps the thread from unravelling during sewing, even if it’s a single-ply thread. Plus, it makes the thread resistant to abrasion, gives it a smooth finish, and helps it move easily through the fabric without causing friction.
I love using bonded thread for tough jobs like outdoor gear, luggage, and upholstery because it can handle almost anything. It comes in different sizes, from #46 to #660, so there’s always the right one for your project.
Bonded thread is a lifesaver when I need something super reliable and long-lasting!
So yeah,
Polyester, nylon, gutermann and bonded thread are perfect for top stitching. I use any one of them whenever I need to top stitch. But if you ask which one is my favorite then I would say.
The Gutermann thread is my absolute favourite thread for the top stitch.
Top Stitch Thread Weight
The thread weight for the top stitch is as important as the thread type. After selecting the right thread it’s time to select the right thread weight for the top stitch.
The rule is simple:
Go heavier for bold, standout stitches. Topstitching thread typically ranges from 30 to 50 weight, with 30 being the thicker. The bolder option and 50 offer a slightly subtler look while still standing out more than regular sewing thread.
Here’s the thing—
The lower the weight number, the thicker the thread. So, if you’re after those crisp, eye-catching stitches (like the ones you see on denim or leather), go for a 30-weight thread. For a more refined topstitch on lightweight fabrics, 50-weight is your go-to.
Grandma Pro tip:
Pair that heavier thread with a topstitching needle (size 90/14 or larger) so it can handle the thickness without breaking a sweat.
