After making a bunny with felt & blanket stitch, I decided to do something more interesting with it. I keep thinking about what I can do 🤔 That’s when making a blanket with fleece idea comes up. So I thought why not note down how to blanket stitch on fleece for my sewing book?
So, let’s go start making a blanket. The first stop is choosing a fleece fabric. Just like struggle with applique, I struggle with this, too. Cause there are many options to choose from.
Each of them is better than the other, but I decided to go with cotton fleece. It is easy to handle, and you can do types of stitches by hand sewing here.
Cause it is soft and makes the perfect cozy blanket to wear at night. After taking the fabric, I cut the fabric 30 inches to 35 inches. The size depends on you and the well meaning sewing.
The next stop is marking-
Now that your fabric is ready, it’s time to mark where you want to do your blanket stitching. Use a fabric marker, even at a distance from the edge. This will be your stitching guide. Ensure the markings are about 1/2 inch from the edge so your stitches look neat and consistent.
Then I thread my 24 size chenille needle with 9-size pearl thread. And now let me show you How to blanket stitch on fleece:
Then I place the needle at the back of the fleece fabric to hide the knot to start a stitch by hand. Then, Pull it up through the fabric from the backside to the front.
Depending on your desired length, the stitch should start about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch away from the edge. Just like any other blanket stitch instructions. You can use a DIY blanket stitch sewing tool for the perfect space.
Now here’s where the fun begins
Once the needle is out through the front, pull the thread taut. Then, instead of going back down through the same hole. I go slightly forward along the Blanket stitch edges (about 1/8 inch ahead) and bring the needle down into the fabric.
As you pull the thread tight, you should see a small loop forming around the edge of the fabric. This loop will be the defining part of the blanket stitch. Now, just keep repeating this process around the edges.
When you reach a corner, it’s a little trickier.
Instead of stitching at a sharp angle, I stitch around the corner by making extra blanket stitches along the fabric edge (before you turn the corner). This smooths the edge and maintains that nice looped look around the perimeter.
While stitching this part, I run off the thread! 😑 I had to put thread and continue the blanket stitch.
Keep the rhythm until the end.
When I get to the end. I tie it off, go to the backside of the fabric, and pass the needle under a few of the stitches I have already made. And tie a small knot to secure the thread.
And that’s it I just made a blanket with fleece 😍 ready for a warm, cozy winter! If this looks so simple, you can try Creative blanket stitch options. Don’t hesitate to experiment with stitching and share it with sewinginspo.I would also love to take some sewing inspiration.
